S5/6 Pupil council minutes – 4/5/11
Present: Ms Gordon, Lee Macalister, Ross Turner (late from prelim), Robyn Stewart, Natalie Bushell (late from prelim), Nick Rogerson (late from prelim), Layla Monteith, William Mackenzie (late from prelim), Joscelyn Mackenzie, Emma Simpson, Michael Rainne, Rachael Earith, Amie McDiarmid, Tommy Watkin, Helen Matheson
- Diaries
· The group agreed that the smaller Leeds company diary that Ms Gordon circulated was much more suitable and it was felt that pupils would be more inclined to use it
· It was also noted that having an information section on driving, banking and UCAS would be beneficial.
· It was also felt that using mobile phones to record homework should be a privilege for senior pupils only and if anyone misused this then there should be appropriate sanctions.
- Uniform
Ms Gordon outlined the proposals for the Uniform code that had been collated from previous pupil council meetings and the group were asked to comment on it.
The group agreed that
· school colours should be black, white and grey
· the preferred shades of grey were light grey (birch) and mid grey (slate)
· faded black jeans were not appropriate
· tracksuits bottoms should not be worn except in PE
· white sports trainers were not appropriate unless in PE
· leggings and jeggings were not appropriate.
The group felt strongly that 2 tier uniform code for S1-3 and S4-6 should be changed.
It was felt that S4 should not be classed as seniors as:
· there could never be an S4/5/6 Christmas social as the hall isn’t big enough
· there isn’t enough room to have an S4/5/6 social area
· S4 pupils can’t leave school until 16 which makes it difficult to enforce the wearing of blazers
· S5/6 pupils should look different to S1-4 pupils
· Pupils in S5/6 have chosen to return to Dingwall academy and should comply with the dress code if they want to come here
· Pupils grow a lot between S4 and S5 so a new blazer would be needed each year
S5/6 pupil council uniform proposal:
S1- 4
· Polo shirts – white, black or grey
· Sweatshirts, hoodies, zippies (fleeced) – black or grey
· Trousers – black or grey
· Skirts – black or grey
Encourage S4 to wear
· Shirt/tie – white shirt only
· Pullover
· Cardigan
· NOT sweatshirts, hoodies, zippies
· Trousers/skirts
S5-6
· Shirt/tie – white shirt only
· Blazers
· Trousers/ skirts
· NOT sweatshirts, hoodies, zippies
Blazers
· The 3 makes of uniform from the 2 suppliers were tried on. The group were unable to decide on a preferred make/style of blazer
3. AOB
· As the dress down day was so successful for Red Nose day it was felt that this should be continued at the end of each term. Pupils pay £1 and the money collected should go to a local charity, which pupils could vote for in PSE/pupil council meetings
· S5 prefects are needed to ensure all duties are covered
· S6 yearbook committee is required which starts in August. This would allow photos and events to be captured throughout the year. The captains should chair the committee and then report to the S5/6 depute
· Perfects should run the tuck shop at break time. This would be a ‘real duty’ that they could use on their CVs
