Location: Room 204

Minute Taker: Helen Matheson
Present:
Russel McIntyre, Jack Hogg, Gordie Brisbane, Peter Dingwall, Lewis Whyte, Eleanor Wilson, Alistair M, Donald Mackillop, Caitlin Urquhart, Lauren Murison, Rory Davis, Michael Anderson, Lauren Fraser, Adam Carter, Cameron Harper, Dylan White, Caitlin Macleod, Kiera Brown, Ben Preston, Ruth Olivant.
1/1 - Introduction
Ms Gordon explained the aim and functions of the pupil council and gave out a handout
1/2 - Structure of a school day
· All representatives approve of the 7 period day and 5 period day
· All disapprove of the 2-2-3 period structure
· Approx. 40% want 3-2-2 period structure
· Remaining 60% prefer the structure as it is, 2-3-2
· 3 out of 20 representatives would like registration back. They felt that registration eased them into the day (don’t like going straight into work) and registration was useful for chatting, getting organised, and handing in alternative work.
Action Point
· Representatives to ask their class their views on changing to a 3-2-2 period structure or staying with the 2-3-2 period structure
1/3- Uniform
· Ms Gordon supplied handouts
Ø What a dress code offers
Ø Dingwall Academy Uniform and alternative school uniforms
· Views on uniform at present
Ø Too dark , would like more colour ie grey, black and white
Ø Ill-fitting
Ø Too casual
Ø Poor quality material, it fades, stretches and garments lose their shape
Ø Trackies and hoodies shouldn’t be worn
· It was felt that the uniform should be made more formal
· Some representatives do not like the idea of a different uniform for different years in S1/2, S3/4 and S5/6 ( Stirling high school model)
· Some representatives felt that shoes should not be part of the uniform code
Action Point
Representatives to seek views from their classes on:
- What colour should the uniform be? (max of 3 or 4 colours, bear in mind brighter colours are more expensive)?
- Should there be 1 uniform from S1-6?
- Should there be 2 uniform styles, S1-3 and S4-6 or S1-4 and S5/6?
- Should there be 3 uniform styles, S1/2, S3/4 and S5/6?
- Once decided on a uniform style, what should it consist of, bearing in mind it was agreed to make uniform smarter/more formal
- What items of clothing are not acceptable as uniform?
Ms Gordon to raise at SMT
- pupil concerns on staff dress
1/4 - Format of diaries
· Pupils generally don’t use them
Ø Forget they have them
· Diaries should be purely for homework and test dates
Ø Take out the facts/periodic table/maps etc
· Representatives feel they should have the choice to have a diary or not
· Representatives don’t like the size
Ø Would much prefer them to be smaller
Action Point
· Ms Gordon to get a sample of a smaller sized diary for pupil council to look at
1/5 - Any Other Business
· Vending machine does not provide enough variety. Ms Gordon explained that as a health promoting school we could not stock vending machines with ‘junk food’
· Representatives feel there should be a ‘dress down Friday’ or ‘dress down day’ at the end of term. Pupils would pay £1 and money goes to charity and school funds
Action Points
· Representatives are to ask their class for suggestions for healthy snacks for the vending machine
· Ms Gordon to raise issue of dress down day at end of term with SMT
