CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE - Letter to parents |

LETTER TO PARENTS
Curriculum for Excellence is now being introduced across Scotland for all 3-18 year olds – wherever they learn. It aims to raise standards, prepare our children for a future they do not yet know and equip them for jobs of tomorrow in a fast changing world.
Curriculum for Excellence enables professionals to teach subjects creatively, to work together across the school and with other educational establishments, to share best practice and explore learning together. It balances the importance of knowledge and skills. Every child is entitled to a broad and deep general education, whatever their level and ability. Every single teacher and practitioner will be responsible for literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing – the number and language skills that unlock other subjects and are vital to everyday life.
There will be new ways of assessing progress and ensuring that children achieve their potential. There will be new qualifications for literacy and numeracy from 2012/13 and new national 4 and 5 subject based qualification from 2013/14. Access Higher and Advanced Higher will be updated to take account of, and support, the new approaches to learning and teaching. The first group to experience the new structure will be the current Primary 7 pupils.
In DingwallAcademy, we feel that we are particularly well placed to help pupils through their learning journey, and are proposing some changes to the Curriculum. These can be summarised as follows:
· Meet the Government recommendations for Physical Activity across the School
· PSE re-introduced to UpperSchool
· Interdisciplinary activities in the LowerSchool
· A House tutor system to be introduced
· Daily contact in Maths and English for S3 and S4 pupils
In order to implement these changes, it will be necessary to alter the structure of the school day. Our proposal is that the school week will consist of 33 periods of 50 minutes, and that the 10 minute Registration time be removed. This will result in days of unequal length, but over the week pupils will be taught for exactly the same time. The proposed structure will be 4 days of 7 periods and 1 day of 5 periods. In essence, pupils will start slightly earlier and finish slightly later on the 7 period days, and will finish considerably earlier on the 5 period day.
There will be a meeting for parents on Thursday 4th March at 7.00pm at DingwallAcademy when there will be an opportunity to find out more about the new Curriculum. Please complete the tear-off form below and return to your own school by Friday 26th February.
